Prosthodontics is the branch of dentistry concerned with the replacement of oral and extra oral facial structure to improve function, comfort, appearance, and health of the patient. Treatment modalities include complete denture, removable partial denture, fixed dental prosthesis, dental implants and Maxillo facial Prosthesis.

BACKGROUND

Department was established in 2007. Following numerous reconstructions, the Department was relocated to the present building. All departments of the Faculty of Dentistry are located in this modern, 4-storey building. The Department of Prosthodontics is comprised of a speciality clinic and a preclinical lab on two different floors, which have been specially developed for the specialised treatment of the Department’s patients and for the dental student’s training.

TREATMENT

The dental specialty concerned with the making of artificial replacements for missing teeth, parts of the mouth and facial tissues using biocompatible substitutes. The discipline of prosthodontics covers a broad area and includes fixed, removable, hybrid (semifixed), maxillo-facial prosthodontics, Implant prosthodontics.

Fixed prosthodontics replacement of missing teeth with restorations that are permanently attached to the teeth and cannot be removed by the patient.

Removable prosthodontics is replacement of missing teeth and associated structures with restorations that are removed by the patient on a daily basis. These restorations derive their support from the teeth and/or bone and soft tissues. Few varieties of removable option,

• A complete denture replaces all the missing teeth while a removable partial denture replaces one or more missing teeth.
• overdenture which derives some support from underlying retained natural teeth that have been endodontically treated and reduced to a low profile
• immediate denture which is a prosthesis that is delivered the same day a tooth or the remaining teeth are extracted.

Hybrid prosthesis also called fixed-detachable dentures, are a way to replace missing teeth and gum tissue with a prosthesis, attached to dental implants.
