ABOUT US

For the academic year 2018-2019, there were a handful of informative and educative CDE and Awareness programmes conducted by the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, which included participation of Postgraduate and Undergraduate students, also eminent maxillofacial surgeons across India.

The Awareness programmes“RUN FOR OMFS” and “OMFS MARATHON” conducted in Chennai on30th September 2018 and 9th February 2019 respectively helped in creating public awareness about the Field of Maxillofacial Surgery and its role in the present scenario of healthcare system. The “Oral Cancer Screening” programme conducted on 31st May 2019 at the Koyembedu Bus Stand and Koyembedu Market helped in screening a huge number of people and educating them on the importance of early detection, etiology, prevention and various treatment modalities available for Oral Cancer.

The CDE programmes included, the yearly course of BLS( Basic Life Support) which was conducted on 25th April 2018 and 14th May 2019 for the Undergraduates, Postgraduates and Staffs We were proud to host the Preconference Course of 43rd AOMSI on the topic “Principles in Maxillofacial Trauma” on 10th October 2018 which was informative to a lot of budding young maxillofacial surgeons. “Live Surgical Workshop and Student Convention” conducted on 14th and 15th November 2018 at our college received huge appreciation and positive feedback from the Students and Delegates. Other CDE programmes include, on topics “Current Management of Oral Cancer- A Multidisciplinary Approach” and “Outcome based Education” which were conducted on 12th April 2019 and 16th-17th April 2019 respectively.

There were two Guest lectures organized by the Department of Oral and maxillofacial Surgery in the previous year which included,

1. “Role of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in Trauma Management” and “Oral Cancer and its Update” by Dr.S. Ramkumar (Hon. State Secretary, AOMSI) &DrSenthilMurugan (Prof. Dept of OMFS, SRM Dental College) respectively on 13th February 2018.

2. “Etiology, Classification and Surgical management of impacted teeth” by Dr. Deepak. C (Reader, Dept of OMFS, Faculty of Dental Sciences, Sri Ramachandra University) on 18th December 2018.

Dr. Ann Bevina made the College and Department of Oral and maxillofacial Surgery proud by obtaining the “University Gold Medal in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery” from “The Dr. M.G.R Medical University, Chennai” for the academic year 2018, also Mr. Subham Agarwal was awarded with “The State AOMSI Medal” for the academic year 2019.

Academic year 2018-2019 came out to be a prosperous period for the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and College. Dr. Bharathi was awarded the AOMSI Gold Medal for the Exam conducted by the AOMSI Tamilnadu state branch for the year 2018.

In 2018, at the National Conference of the Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons of India(AOMSI) conducted at Chennai, Prof. Dr. S Jimson (Head of the Department, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) was elected as National Executive Committee Member, which glorified the prestige of Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and College. In the same year, Prof.Dr.S. Jimson, for his eminent contribution and hard work, was honored with the Appreciation Award by the Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons of India(AOMSI).

Recently, in 2019, at the State Committee of Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons of India(AOMSI) Tamilnadu branch conducted at Annamalai University, Chidambaram, Prof. Dr.S.Jimson was elected as the Honorary State Secretary of AOMSI Tamilnadu branch, which is a proud moment for the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and College, also placed him at the top tier among the eminent Maxillofacial Surgeons in the country.

Prof. Dr. S. Jimson was also honored with the Active SPOCB Appreciation Award by the NPTEL/SWAYAM for the third consecutive year (2017,2018,2019) for his valuable contribution to the field of Research. He also guides the undergraduate and postgraduate students to take up NPTEL exam every year as a stepping stone in the field of research. Through his work he shows an example for the undergraduates and postgraduates to take up Research.

Google Teaching Classrooms for third and final year BDS and Small group discussions (everyday) for third, final year BDS & CRRI are the unique teaching methodology adopted by the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery which benefit students by giving them individual attention and imparting thorough knowledge of the subject. There is also a Video Library in the Department which students can make use of.
